Signature whistles of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus): stability and mother-offspring comparisons

Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology1990-05-01

Research Abstract & Summary

Longitudinal field study in Sarasota Bay, Florida, demonstrating that individually distinctive signature whistles can remain stable for at least 12 years, with mother-offspring comparisons showing female calves produce whistles distinct from their mothers while male calves produce whistles more similar to their mothers.
