BirdNET
Lab & Provider: Cornell Lab of Ornithology / Chemnitz University of Technology
Overview & Technical Scope
Deep convolutional neural network developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology. Evaluated on 984 species in its seminal 2021 study (Kahl et al.), with modern platform versions (BirdNET-Analyzer) supporting over 6,000 wildlife taxa.
Convolutional Neural Network (ResNet-derived)
Evaluated on 984 North American and European bird species in Kahl et al. (2021) using mean average precision; expanded to over 6,000 wildlife taxa in BirdNET-Analyzer.
Acoustic classification system predicting taxonomic presence from spectrogram slices. Does not model vocal sequence semantics or generative communication.
Note: Computational acoustic pattern modeling and next-token sequence predictions must not be conflated with semantic translation of non-human vocalizations into human language.
